The Tale of Picws Du, Fan Foel and the Lady of the Lake
Picws Du and Fan Foel are two striking peaks that form part of the Black Mountain range in South Wales. Known for their dramatic ridges and commanding views, these mountains have a rich history and are a haven for hikers seeking both challenge and serenity.
The Lady of the Lake in Llyn y Fan Fach is a captivating figure from Welsh folklore. Legend has it that she emerged from the lake, marrying a local farmer and gifting him wisdom and healing powers. This mystical tale adds an enchanting layer to the beauty of Llyn y Fan Fach, making it a place where myth and nature intertwine, leaving visitors spellbound.
The Hike
The hike started at Llyn y fan car park, a great start ascending along river Afon Sawdde at the end of this river we reach Llyn y Fan Fach. a breath taking lake. With us we a newly married couple K and M who are new to hiking.
We followed a path towards Llyn y fan Fawr whilst on this route we witnessed a trail race going on with mature men and women which was truly inspirational. When we reached the lake we stopped for lunch and a swim in the lake.
We then decided to add an little extra for our guests on the hike which is our company name, Off track mountaineering! we went up the final ascent to Llyn Fan Fawr off track style. K and M, both new to hiking, embarked on an ascent of a challenging mountain that mirrored the spirit of perseverance found in the legend of the Lady of the Lake. With each step, they conquered not only the physical challenges but also the metaphorical ones that life threw their way. As they reached the summit, they discovered their own reservoirs of strength and determination, proving that, much like the Lady of the Lake, the mountains have the power to inspire and transform those who dare to ascend their heights.
We followed the Bannau Sir Gaer ridge to Pics Du and started our decent down to Pant y Bwlch and then the track back to the car park. Both Krish and Mickey’s determination and efforts during the challenging mountain hike left a lasting impression on all of us.
