Wild Camping in the Lake District

22 July 20230

Throughout this past week, Greg has been to the Lake District with frequent hiker Alex to tackle a 3 day wild camping expedition in the North Eastern Fells, with a technical mountaineering day in the Borrowdale Valley to finish off the week.

Day 1 set the week off to a strong start tackling the Grade 1 Scramble up Sharp Edge to Blencathra, navigating between the mountains to establish the first camp on Sale How, just below Skiddaw.

Day 2 was challenged with some adverse weather more or less throughout the whole day, limiting visibility increasing the importance of routine accurate navigation. They located the Great Lingy Bothy on along the Cumbria Way route and rested there meeting a whole variety of different hikers as they tackled their own challenges. Concluding at the Bowscale Tarn, Greg and Alex set up camp in what proved to be a brilliant sheltered spot.

Day 3 concluded the wild camping phase of the exped, traversing across the mountain back to Blencathra, making it into Keswick in time for some quality lunch.

Day 4 concluded the weeks adventures with a technical day tackling a Grade 2 Scramble up Cam Crag, with some fun abseiling practice. All in a tough day, to finish off a tough week of some quality mountaineering in the Lake District.
